New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery is located on Acorn Gap Road, across from New Hope Church, between Oak Grove and the old Loudon Road, on Bulging Branch (a tributary of Bat Creek), old Dist. 11, Monroe County Tennessee, about 5 miles North of Madisonville near Sweetwater.
History This cemetery was not begun until a few years after the church was formed in about 1868. The first parcel was donated by the Moser-Airheart family who at the time owned the land across Acorn Gap road from the church. Much later the Boring family donated the new portion. It is said the Borings reserved the upper two rows for their family. The earliest white settlers in this area were the ones who purchased land thru the Hiwassee Purchase. The Cherokees had traded this land in 1817-1819 for land in the West, known as the Arksanas Territory. The record of these purchases are on micro-film at local libraries. Some of the first land owners were Nicholas Airheart, Peter and Henry Brakebill, Spencer Blankenship, Sam Edington, Thomas Owen Henley, Big Sam Johnston, Frederick Dean, Abijah Fowler, Abraham Buck, Francis Moser Jr. John Moser, Peter Moser,Sheets, Mowrys, Kittrels, Kellars, Axleys, Cochrans, Lowrys, Coles, Worthys, Parks, etc.
